Fly Fishing Double Nymph Rig Techniques and Setup
Fly fishing with a double nymph rig is an effective technique for catching trout in various water conditions. This setup involves using two nymph flies attached to the leader in tandem, increasing your chances of enticing strikes from feeding fish.The basic double nymph rig consists of a heavier point fly tied to the end of the leader, with a lighter dropper fly attached about 12-18 inches above it. The point fly serves as an anchor that helps sink the rig and provides weight for casting, while the dropper fly presents a different pattern that may appeal to selective fish.
To set up a double nymph rig, start with a 9-foot leader tapered to 4X or 5X. Tie your heavier nymph （such as a beadhead pheasant tail or hare\“s ear） to the end using an improved clinch knot. Then, attach the dropper fly using either a blood knot loop or by tying directly to the bend of the hook on the point fly.
Effective nymph patterns for double rigs include beadhead nymphs, prince nymphs, copper johns, and zebra midges. Vary the size, color, and weight of your flies based on water conditions and fish feeding behavior. Add split shot above the knot connection if needed for deeper pools or faster currents.
When fishing the double nymph rig, focus on reading the water to identify likely holding spots for trout. Look for seams between fast and slow water, behind rocks, along undercut banks, and in deep pools. Use a strike indicator to detect subtle takes, and maintain a drag-free drift through the target zone.
