In standard poker hand rankings, three of a kind does beat two pairs. This is a fundamental rule in most poker variations including Texas Hold\“em and Omaha.The hand rankings from highest to lowest are: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pairs, one pair, and high card. Therefore, three of a kind ranks higher than two pairs in the poker hand hierarchy.
When comparing hands, three of a kind consists of three cards of the same rank, while two pairs contains two different pairs of cards of the same rank. The mathematical probability of making three of a kind is lower than making two pairs, which explains why it ranks higher in poker hand values.
