Do Professional Poker Players Count Cards?

Professional poker players do not count cards in the same way that blackjack players do. While card counting is a legitimate strategy in blackjack, it is not applicable to poker because the deck is reshuffled after each hand. However, professional poker players do employ various mathematical and probabilistic techniques to gain an edge.

In poker, players track which cards have been dealt to calculate probabilities and make better decisions. This process is often called “card removal“ or “range tracking“ rather than card counting. Professional players memorize opponent tendencies, calculate pot odds, and use game theory optimal strategies to maximize their winning potential.

The main difference between poker and blackjack card tracking is that in poker, players are estimating what cards might remain in the deck based on visible cards and opponent actions, whereas in blackjack, players are precisely tracking the ratio of high to low cards remaining in the shoe.
