Countries Eligible for US Green Card Lottery

The Diversity Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is a US government program that makes 50,000 immigrant visas available annually through a random drawing. The program aims to diversify the immigrant population in the United States by selecting applicants from countries with low rates of immigration to the US.

To be eligible for the Green Card Lottery, applicants must be natives of qualifying countries. Each year, the US Department of State publishes a list of countries whose natives are eligible to participate. Generally, countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are excluded from eligibility.

Some of the countries typically eligible for the program include most African nations, many European countries (except the UK), and various Asian and Oceania countries. However, eligibility can change from year to year based on immigration patterns.

In addition to being from an eligible country, applicants must meet education or work experience requirements. They must have either a high school education or its equivalent, or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience.

The application process is free and must be completed online during the specified registration period, usually in the fall of each year. Only one entry per person is permitted, and multiple entries will disqualify the applicant.
