Countries with Visa Lottery Programs
The Diversity Visa Lottery program, officially known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, is administered by the United States government to provide immigration opportunities for individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. This program aims to diversify the immigrant population in the US by selecting applicants through a random lottery system. Each year, approximately 55,000 diversity visas are made available through this program. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific education or work experience requirements and must be natives of qualifying countries. The list of eligible countries changes annually based on immigration patterns from the previous five years.
Some of the countries that have typically been eligible for the diversity visa lottery include nations from Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. However, countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the US in the previous five years are generally excluded from participation.
The application process for the diversity visa lottery is free and must be completed online during the designated registration period, which usually occurs in the fall. Selected applicants then go through a thorough visa interview process at US embassies or consulates before being granted permanent residency.
