OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser: Rival to Google Chrome dominance?
OpenAI has recently released its artificial intelligence-powered web browser ChatGPT Atlas in an attempt to challenge Google’s dominance.

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, it is “a rare, once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about and how to use one.”
ChatGPT Atlas will feature agentic mode, helping the users to browse around the internet automatically and giving the users information after analyzing and predicting their browsing history.
Moreover, the highly-anticipated web browser will use AI chatbot interface instead of classic URL search bar.
Initially, the newly-launched browser will be available on Apple laptops. Later, it will be launched on Apple’s iOS, Microsoft’s Windows, and Google’s Android phone system.
Can OpenAI’s Atlas browser challenge Google Chrome dominance?
Paddy Harrington of London-based market research group Forrester criticized OpenAI’s new browser for stealing the whole personality from users as the engine is going to decide on their behalf.
“Your profile will be personally attuned to you based on all the information sucked up about you,“ Harrington said.
He also predicted that it would be highly difficult for OpenAI to compete with Google which owns massive market share.
Google-Chrome dominated browse market
Since its launch in 2008, Google’s Chrome has gathered around 3 billion audience globally, giving a blow to Edge browsers and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
According to Pat Moorhead, CEO and chief analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, early adopters will test the new OpenAI browser, but he is skeptical that Atlas will outcompete Chrome and Microsoft Edge as mainstream, beginner, and corporate users will wait until their preferred browsers incorporate similar features.
It is expected that Google will uplift its game through the next major AI release, Gemini 3 in which the tech giant will deeply integrate next-generation AI-powered capabilities into its market-leading Chrome browser.
As per tech experts’ observations, Gemini 3 is expected to feature an expanded ability to reason across images, videos, and texts being embedded in Chrome.
However, OpenAI’s challenge comes a year after Google was declared an illegal monopolist in online search.
Turning shift to AI-powered search engines
In an AI-driven era, the users are turning towards large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT for browsing and recommendations.
According to the research firm Datos data, in July 5.99 percent of searches on desktop browsers went to LLMs, demonstrating a two-fold figure from previous year.
As per findings from Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, around 60 percent of Americans and 74 percent under 30s use AI-powered searches to extract information.
In recent years, Google has also invested in AI, prioritising AI-generated answers appearing at the top of its search results.
Unfortunately, these AI-generated answers raise the issue of information accuracy.
Research published by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the BBC suggested that 45% of AI responses studied contained at least one significant issue, with 81% having some form of problem. |
