Prince Andrew living ‘rent free’ in Royal Lodge as shocking details emerge
There has been a narrative going on about how King Charles is unable to kick out his brother Prince Andrew out of the lavish Windsor property, Royal Lodge, given the “iron-clad” lease of the disgraced royal with the Crown estate.
The monarch had cut off of the allowance and security of Andrew in hopes that his brother won’t be able to afford rent and upkeep, eventually forced to evict the royal home. However, the former Duke proved that he had the sufficient funds to pay rent.
Although, it turns out Andrew hasn’t paid any rent on the property for the past 20 years, according to new documents, obtained by The Times, revealing details of the said lease.
The legal papers state that Andrew’s rent has been set a “one peppercorn (if demanded)” per year since 2003. Moreover, Andrew and his family – including ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, are allowed to live in the property until 2078.
The ‘peppercorn rent’ refers to the legal time suggesting that this is just a formality like a symbolic amount to make the agreement valid.
Andrew has seemingly paid £1million for the lease and at least £7.5million towards extensive refurbishments completed in 2005. If Andrew wants to give up the property, the Crown estate will owe him roughly £558,000.
The revelation comes as Andrew released a statement via the Buckingham Palace, relinquishing the use of royal titles and honours, including his dukedom and the Order of Garter, amid the harrowing allegations against him in connection to Jeffery Epstein. |
