Surf fishing requires proper casting technique to reach productive fishing zones beyond the breaking waves. Start by selecting a suitable surf rod, typically 10 to 12 feet long, and a spinning reel spooled with 20 to 30 pound test line. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, facing the ocean. Hold the rod with your dominant hand on the reel seat and your other hand above it on the rod butt. Use the pendulum cast for maximum distance: let about 3 to 4 feet of line hang from the rod tip, swing the sinker and bait backward, then smoothly accelerate forward, releasing the line as the rod points toward the target. Practice in an open area to master timing and avoid tangles. Always check behind you for people or obstacles before casting. |
