  How 3I/ATLAS is helping to protect Earth from future comets

3I/ATLAS may help protect Earth from hazardous future comets, contrary to the popular belief that it poses a threat to the planet.

Experts are hopeful to gain significant insights from studying the tail of humanity\“s third-recorded interstellar visitor, which could help space agencies monitor other hazardous objects in future.  Advertisement

3I/ATLAS, originally discovered in June, has shown several mysterious properties, including reverse thrust near the sun, prompting several astronomers such Dr Avi Loeb to propose that it might be an alien tech.  

The comet is expected to depart our solar system between November 27, 2025 and January 27, 2026, while experts at International Asteroid Warning Network （IAWN） are conducting a “comet campaign”.  

The campaign aims to help astronomers in refining methods for tracking the exact location of 3I/ATLAS as well as asteroids that might appear a threat to the Earth in future.  

A coalition of space experts is also planning to hold a workshop on comet astrometry that will help blueprint the method of studying future interstellar visitors.  

For context, comet astrometry is the measurement of a comet\“s position in the sky, which is essential for determining its orbit and trajectory.

Though the alien comet has kept space enthusiasts and experts on edge, it also presents unique opportunities to learn and strengthen Earth’s planetary defense systems for the future.
