Drew Barrymore gets in awkward situation with ex Luke Wilson
Drew Barrymore had an unexpectedly funny on-air moment when she tried calling ex-boyfriend Luke Wilson, and he didn’t pick up.
The surprise call happened during the Nov. 4 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, where she and filmmaker Vince Gilligan were reminiscing about Home Fries, the 1998 romantic comedy the three worked on together. Advertisement
Barrymore, 50, dialed Wilson while speaking with Gilligan, but the call went straight to voicemail.
Smiling through the awkward moment, she left a warm message anyway, telling him, “We were just talking about you and we’re sending you love, and can you believe Home Fries was 27 years ago now?”
She laughed and admitted, “This is not going the way I planned.”
She continued the message by saying she loved him and was thinking of him, adding that she was on set with Gilligan.
He chimed in, “Great saying hi to you, Luke,” as the audience watched the impromptu reunion attempt.
During a commercial break, Wilson returned the call live. He explained he had been doing chores and then praised Gilligan’s success after Home Fries, saying, “It’s just so incredible to see what you went on and did after Home Fries.”
He went on to celebrate Gilligan’s writing career — from Breaking Bad to Better Call Saul — noting that “that’s the first way we all met you… It’s unbelievable, what you did.”
Gilligan jokingly reacted, “Oh, God bless you, man, Jesus. I’m blushing here!”
Wilson looked back on Home Fries as one of his first films and remembered filming in Texas, his home state.
He also laughed about a night when he and costar Jake Busey, after “a couple beers,” pointed a flashlight at a train just for fun — only later realizing it was a federal offense.
Barrymore chimed in with her own memory from their relationship, saying, “Remember I got arrested for public urination with you?”
Barrymore and Wilson dated from around 1996 to 1998. Their lighthearted exchange showed they’re still on friendly terms — even if he didn’t answer the phone right away.
The Drew Barrymore Show airs weekdays on CBS. Gilligan’s latest project, the Apple TV drama Pluribus, premieres Friday, Nov. 7. |
