Adam Driver reveals pitching Disney a \“Star Wars\“ movie

Adam Driver has revealed that he and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh once developed and pitched a Star Wars film centered on his character, Kylo Ren, but Disney ultimately turned it down.

In a recent conversation with the Associated Press, Driver shared that he and Soderbergh spent nearly two years working on a project titled The Hunt for Ben Solo.

The film would have taken place after The Rise of Skywalker, following Ben Solo’s search for redemption after the events of the final trilogy.

The initial story was crafted by Soderbergh along with Logan Lucky writer Rebecca Blunt, while Scott Z. Burns later joined to write the full script.

“I always was interested in doing another Star Wars,” Driver said.

“I had been talking about doing another one since 2021. Kathleen [Kennedy] had reached out. I always said: ‘With a great director and a great story, I’d be there in a second.’ I loved that character and loved playing him.”

According to Driver, the film had a very different feel compared to the recent Star Wars entries.

He described it as “handmade and character-driven,” adding that it carried the emotional depth of The Empire Strikes Back. He called that 1980 classic the “standard” of what a Star Wars movie should be.

The actor and Soderbergh eventually pitched The Hunt for Ben Solo to Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Cary Beck.

“We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea,” Driver recalled.

“They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it. We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.”

Soderbergh later reflected on the experience, telling AP that he “really enjoyed making the movie in my head,” adding that he was simply disappointed fans would never get to see it.

Driver agreed, calling the project “one of the coolest (expletive) scripts I had ever been a part of.”

Driver first appeared as Kylo Ren in 2015’s The Force Awakens and went on to reprise the role in The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Though The Hunt for Ben Solo never made it to production, it’s clear that both Driver and Soderbergh had envisioned a deeply personal story that might have taken the Star Wars saga in a bold new direction.
