 King Charles set to get legal power to strip Andrew\“s titles
King Charles is set to gain a new tool in his efforts to manage the fallout from Andrew\“s scandals, as new legislation is being introduced in the House of Commons that could formally strip Prince Andrew of his dukedom.
The proposed law, tabled by Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, would grant the monarch the power to remove royal titles either on his own initiative, following a joint parliamentary committee recommendation, or at the request of the titleholder. Advertisement
Maskell stressed the importance of formal action, saying, “It is time for Parliament to act so that it, or the monarch, can remove titles.
The Duke of York title may no longer be being used by its holder, but it has not been removed.”
MP Rachael Maskell, who had the Labour whip suspended in July, said of her proposal, “My short Bill, The Removal of Titles Bill, will fix this; I hope it can now be supported by Parliament.”
The legislation would allow the monarch to remove titles either on his own initiative, following a parliamentary committee recommendation, or at the request of the titleholder.
Andrew’s decision to step back from his titles comes amid ongoing scrutiny over his friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Despite relinquishing his honours, he will retain his status as a prince as the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II. |
