UPS cargo plane ignites major fire in Kentucky, leaving seven dead

A UPS cargo plane （Flight 2976） crashed and exploded shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport （SDF） in Kentucky on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
The serious incident occurred around 17:15 local time （22:15 GMT） when the freight plane exploded shortly after its departure, injuring at least 11 people and sending heavy black smoke into the sky.
According to the Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, the plane’s crew members were likely confirmed dead, and officials warned that people suffered from serious injuries in the incident.
Meanwhile, UPS flight 2976 which was bound for Honolulu, Hawaii, and carrying 38,000 gallons of fuel crashed after taking off from the Louisville runway and hit nearby buildings.
Concerning the situation, the explosion engulfed at least two nearby businesses, and a petroleum company.
According to Louisville Fire Dept’s Brain O Neill, the fire has continuously been fought by crews deployed at the affected crash site.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, at a press conference, directed people to avoid going to the crash site, adding that dangerous and volatile materials are still flammable.
The Louisville Metro Police Department urged people to continue to shelter in place and avoid contact with smoke from the incident that occurred near the airport.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said in a post on X. “The plane crash is an incredible tragedy that our community will never forget.”
He further added, “We are also thankful for our brave first responders who have flooded the scene to help try and control the fire and provide support for any victims on the ground.” |
