The Diversity Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, provides an opportunity for individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States to apply for a permanent resident card. Each year, the U.S. Department of State conducts a random selection process to distribute up to 55,000 diversity visas.
To be eligible for the Green Card Lottery, applicants must be natives of qualifying countries. These are nations that have sent fewer than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years. The list of qualifying countries changes annually based on immigration patterns.
Some countries that have typically been included in the qualifying list include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, and many African and European nations. However, countries like Canada, China, India, Mexico, and the United Kingdom are usually excluded due to high immigration numbers.
Applicants must meet education or work experience requirements, having either a high school education or its equivalent, or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience. |
