The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is a United States government program that provides up to 55,000 immigrant visas annually to individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.
To be eligible for the Diversity Visa lottery, applicants must be natives of qualifying countries. Each year, the U.S. Department of State publishes a list of countries whose natives are eligible to participate. Countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the previous five years are typically excluded from eligibility.
The program aims to diversify the immigrant population in the United States by providing opportunities for people from underrepresented regions and countries. Eligible regions include Africa, Asia, Europe, North America (excluding Mexico), Oceania, and South America.
Applicants must meet strict education or work experience requirements. They must have at least a high school education or its equivalent, or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience. |
