The Diversity Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is a United States government program that makes available 55,000 immigrant visas annually to individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S. For the 2020 fiscal year, the list of eligible countries was determined based on data from the previous five years.
To be eligible for the DV-2020 program, applicants must have been born in a qualifying country. Notably, if an applicant\“s country of birth is not eligible, they may still qualify through their spouse\“s country of birth or, in some cases, their parents\“ country of birth, provided certain conditions are met.
The list of eligible countries for the 2020 lottery excluded nations that had sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years. This typically includes countries like Mexico, China, India, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom.
Applicants from Pakistan were eligible to apply for the DV-2020 program, as Pakistan was on the list of qualifying countries. This provided an opportunity for Pakistani nationals to pursue permanent residency in the United States through this randomized selection process. |
