In Pakistan, fishing has been an important traditional activity for centuries, particularly in regions with abundant water resources like Sindh and Punjab. While modern fishing equipment has become more common, many local fishermen still use traditional methods that include simple fishing poles and homemade bobbers.

The traditional Pakistani fishing pole is typically made from local bamboo or other sturdy wood found in the region. These poles are lightweight yet strong enough to handle the various fish species found in Pakistani waters, including rohu, katla, and mrigal.

Local bobbers, known as \“phanda\“ in some regions, are often crafted from natural materials. Fishermen use lightweight wood, dried gourds, or even specially treated cork as floatation devices. These traditional bobbers are designed to be sensitive to the slightest nibble while being visible enough to alert the fisherman.

In coastal areas like Karachi and Gwadar, fishing traditions blend with the marine environment. Here, fishing poles might be slightly longer to handle surf fishing, and bobbers are often larger to withstand ocean currents.

Many rural communities maintain fishing as both a livelihood and cultural practice. The knowledge of making fishing equipment, including proper bobber selection and attachment, is passed down through generations, preserving this important aspect of Pakistani heritage.
