Dynamite fishing, also known as blast fishing, is an illegal and destructive fishing practice that has been observed in some coastal areas of Pakistan. This method involves using explosives to stun or kill large numbers of fish, making them easy to collect from the water surface.
In Pakistan\“s coastal communities, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan provinces, traditional fishing has been a way of life for generations. However, economic pressures and declining fish stocks have led some fishermen to resort to destructive methods like dynamite fishing despite knowing its harmful consequences.
The practice causes severe damage to marine ecosystems, destroying coral reefs, killing non-target species, and damaging breeding grounds. The explosions not only kill the intended fish but also destroy the entire underwater habitat, making recovery difficult for years.
Pakistani authorities, including the Maritime Security Agency and provincial fisheries departments, have been working to combat this practice through increased surveillance, community awareness programs, and promoting sustainable fishing alternatives that align with Pakistan\“s rich maritime heritage and environmental conservation principles. |
