The American Diversity Visa Lottery, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is a program that provides a unique opportunity for individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States to apply for permanent residency. Eligible countries are determined annually by the U.S. government based on immigration data from the previous five years.
To participate in the lottery, applicants must be natives of qualifying countries and meet specific education or work experience requirements. The list of eligible countries changes each year, with some nations being added or removed based on recent immigration patterns. Currently, countries with more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the past five years are generally excluded from participation.
The application process is entirely free and must be completed online through the official U.S. Department of State website during the designated registration period. Winners are selected through a random computer drawing and must then undergo thorough background checks and interviews before receiving their immigrant visas. |
