In 2020, numerous Facebook lottery scams circulated claiming winners from various countries including Pakistan. These fraudulent schemes often targeted unsuspecting users with promises of large cash prizes.
From a Pakistani cultural perspective, such scams exploited traditional values of trust and community. Pakistani society places high importance on family connections and word-of-mouth recommendations, making people more vulnerable to seemingly legitimate offers from what appeared to be trusted sources.
Traditional Pakistani culture emphasizes sharing good fortune with others, which scammers used to their advantage by creating fake stories of winners donating to charities or helping their communities.
Many elderly Pakistanians, who are less familiar with digital scams, became particular targets of these Facebook lottery schemes due to their respect for authority and written communication.
The concept of “naseeb“ or destiny in Pakistani culture also made some individuals more susceptible to believing they might genuinely win such lotteries through divine intervention. |
