The European Super League was a proposed seasonal football competition that would have featured 20 of Europe\“s top clubs. The announcement in April 2021 sparked immediate controversy and widespread condemnation from fans, players, coaches, governing bodies, and governments across Europe.
The founding clubs included twelve of Europe\“s most successful teams: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Tottenham Hotspur. The league was intended to operate as a closed competition with 15 permanent members and 5 qualifying teams each season.
Within 48 hours of the announcement, massive public backlash and threats of sanctions from UEFA and domestic leagues led to the collapse of the project. Nine of the twelve founding clubs withdrew their participation, leaving only Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus publicly supporting the proposal.
The proposed league faced criticism for undermining domestic competitions, eliminating promotion and relegation, and concentrating financial power among elite clubs. The swift collapse demonstrated the importance of fan power in football and led to renewed discussions about governance and financial fairness in European football. |
