Professional poker players typically do not use their own money when playing in major tournaments. Most professional players secure sponsorship deals or backing from investors who provide the buy-in funds in exchange for a percentage of their winnings. This arrangement is known as “staking“ in the poker community.

There are several staking models used in professional poker. In a traditional stake, the backer provides 100% of the tournament buy-ins and expenses, while the player receives a percentage of any profits, usually ranging from 50% to 70%. Some players use a hybrid model where they invest part of their own money while getting backed for the remainder.

The main advantage of playing with backing is that it reduces financial risk for the player. Poker tournaments involve significant variance, and even the best players can experience long losing streaks. With backing, players can compete in high-stakes events without risking personal bankruptcy.

However, some top professional players do use their own money, especially after establishing themselves and building substantial bankrolls. These players prefer maintaining full control over their winnings and not sharing profits with backers.
